My Friend

My friend wears the scars of abuse visibly. She has a crooked nose, she starts when somebody comes up behind her, or if you move too quickly. My friend is very apologetic and soft spoken. My friend is nervous of over-stepping, of being a burden. My friend is quick to praise, however seems shocked when praised herself. You can see how my friend struggles.

A few weeks ago, I was chatting with a couple of ladies and my friend came up in conversation. Her scars and bumps were not discussed. What was repeated consistently is how innately beautiful my friend is. Her grace, her soft spoken manner, and her stunning eyes who have probably witnessed more than I would wish upon anyone. I felt pride, both in my friend, and in these women who truly saw her for who she was.

My friend is kind, and listens. My friend knows the value of time, and appreciates every smile. I wish my friend would smile more, as when she does, her eyes light up and it’s wonderful to see. My friend offers advice and wisdom- apologetically- and what she shares shows discernment that I believe comes through the endurance of hardship and learning to acknowledge the smallest blessing. I am blessed weekly by my friend’s kind words and stark beauty.

I hope one day I can be like my friend. I hope one day others see a beauty within me that shines through any dark times I may carry with me.

I hope one day you can meet someone like my friend, and when you do, that you will see the beauty that lies within.
